UPDATE: 1 dead, 1 in hospital after attempted robbery

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Two were shot during what investigators say was an attempted robbery on Friday night.
Deputies say 18-year-old Dontavis Payne and 18-year-old Trezmaine Jessie Williams allegedly tried to rob 30-year-old Marcus Gainey at gunpoint. They say Gainey then fired shots in self-defense.
The Richmond County Coroner's Office says Williams was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:20 p.m.
Payne was found by investigators with multiple gunshot wounds and is in critical condition at GHSU.
Williams and Payne had active felony warrants for armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Payne and Williams were co-defendants in an unrelated case involving their active warrants.
