SWAINSBORO, Ga. -- A husband is in jail after investigators say he killed his wife on Thanksgiving Day.
Swainsboro Police Chief Randy Ellison confirmed officers are charging 41-year-old James Rountree Jr. with murder.
Officers were called to the couple's home on Watson Street Thanksgiving Day between 10:30 and 10:45 p.m. in reference to a domestic dispute.
When investigators got to the scene, they knocked on the front door twice before the husband responded. Officers say he told them not to come in or he would harm his wife, 26-year-old Maegan Salter Rountree.
After some negotiations, Rountree opened the door. Investigators found his wife dead in the family's bedroom from what officers believe is a single stab wound to the upper chest. She was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators say this followed an ongoing domestic problem within the home.
