AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- A house fire has killed two people after crews believe an 8-year-old was playing with matches, the Aiken County Sheriff's Office confirms.

The two victims of the fire include an 83-year-old grandmother, Mary Childs, and her 3-year-old grandchild, Arbrielle Douse.

Aiken Department of Public Safety fire crews responded to the home after a 911 call late Friday night. ADPS found two victims inside of the home after the fire was put out. Officers say the 8-year-old child escaped the flames.

The coroner says the fire started just before midnight. Crews say an investigation shows the fire started in a bedroom where the 8-year-old was playing with matches.

An autopsy shows the victims died from carbon monoxide poisoning and thermal injury.

No criminal charges are pending.
