Augusta,Ga--After years of fighting, some people living in Hyde Park finally got the keys to their new homes. Several of the renters have been moved out and now it's the homeowners turn.

This week the first homeowners are moving out and neighbors in the area are glad. Isabel Laboard will be needing lots of boxes. She is finally moving out of Hyde Park after calling it home for 40 years. she cried when she got the news.

"I really couldn't believe it for one, I said you sure, they said yes we're sure," said Homeowner Isabel Laboard.

Mostly everything is packed, labeled and ready to go. Laboard will miss her friends like Joanne Johnson.

City officials say the Hyde Park Relocation has cost the just over $1 Million.
"I grew up with her kids and everything. We even went to church together. She's like family," said Hyde Park Resident Joanne Johnson.

This neighborhood is getting smaller by the week. The families at 2045, 2061 and 2023 Willow Street are all nearly moved out. The city is moving 24 families this year. Eight families have new houses, nine will be closing soon and that leaves seven more before Walnut, Willow and Golden Rod streets are empty.

"Quick placement depends on whether they are buying an empty house or buying a house that's occupied," said Executive Director Chester Wheeler.

City leaders are buying up the property to build a retention pond because of years of flooding. We're told once all of the home owners are out of the first phase and that's when the demolition will start. For Laboard, it's been worth the 40 year wait.
