August, Ga (WRDW)----City leaders voted down a property tax increase while at the same time agreeing Sheriff deputies need a raise.

It was standing room only inside the commission chambers. Off-duty deputies lined the walls while angry homeowners sat in the chairs.

"We keep squandering money here there and yonder on a study here for $20,000 or a $100,000. They spend a lot and every-time I look up they are squandering money," said Homeowner Carol Pender.

Homeowner Carol Pender pays thousands a year for property taxes and doesn't want to pay a dime more. Dozens of homeowners spoke before the commission voted on the 1.75 mills that would've brought in $7 million. The voted ended up 6 to 4 with Commissioner Donnie Smith and Mary Davis changing their initial yes vote to no.

"The people that are pushing the millage will have an opportunity next week," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

"We heard from our constituents from across the city that they were unhappy with the increase," said Commissioner Donnie Smith.

Lt. Lewis Blanchard with the Sheriff's Office said deputies were leaving because they were unhappy with their pay. City leaders agreed deputies need more money but haven't found a way to pay for it.

City leaders will meet on Monday to set the millage rate.
