BARNWELL COUNTY, S.C. -- A chemical spill in Barnwell County is now said to be contained.
The spill happened near the intersection of U.S. 278 and S.C. 37. A truck with a damaged seal made a turn, spilling 10 gallons of aniline Friday afternoon.
Aniline is damaging to lungs and skin. One elderly woman has been evacuated near the spill as a precautionary measure.
Hazmat teams responded to the scene.
Since the spill, U.S. 278 has reopened, but S.C. 37 will stay closed for another hour and a half while crews clean up the rest.
Roger Riley, director of Barnwell County Emergency Management, says this could have been a major disaster.
