AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The crowds were gathering as the water flowed, but it looked like the show at the amphitheater was floating away.

"I've been here since 2001, and we've been under a drought for awhile. It normally would be 10 feet high," said Augusta Rowing Club Head Coach Michael Cobb.

He took News 12 out on the Savannah River to show how rough the waters are. A half-submerged park bench, floating limbs and docks minutes away from floating downstream gave a clear picture.

"You know things that are beautiful can sometimes be frightening," said boat rider Scott McPherson.

Augusta Crime Stoppers' Griff Griffin agrees.

"They're thousands of snakes that lived on this river and are now in people's sewers. Those snakes will come up through your drain," he said.

With the high waters, safety is important. Keep your kids and pets out the backyard if you have a sewer or drain coming off the Savannah River for the next few days.

"Thousands of snakes are being pushed in your backyard," Griffin said.

This much water will also bring mosquitoes. Maintaining your lawn and cutting your grass will help.

"Number three is, even if you think you're far off from the water, snakes could come up through your sewers, so avoid the lower levels of the city," Griffin said.

Officials recommend watching from a distance because calm waters can turn deadly in an instant.
