Hephzibah man dies after early morning hit-and-run accident

Saturday, July 14, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A man is dead after an early morning hit-and-run accident.

Adrain L. Gardenhire, 53, was walking southbound on the 4300 block of Deans Bridge Road in the median lane around 2:30 a.m.

Deputies say a vehicle was traveling southbound at the same stretch of road in the median lane.

After investigating the crash, officers found the left front end and the side view mirror of the vehicle struck Gardenhire.

They say the vehicle hit Gardenhire, and then the driver fled the scene.

A witness says the vehicle was possibly a champagne Ford Explorer or Expedition with a left tail light not working.

Deputies recovered a headlight and side view mirror from the scene.

They say a broadcast has been sent out to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the Wrens Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol to help find the driver who struck Gardenhire.

Richmond County Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose pronounced Gardenhire dead at the scene at 3:40 a.m. from blunt force trauma.

The Coroner’s Office is sending his body to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.
