AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Gold Cross EMS is one step closer to staying in Augusta no matter what the Augusta commission decides in the future.

A regional medical subcommittee voted to name Gold cross the ambulance provider for the area.

"We are delighted at the decision," said CEO Vince Brogdon.

Gold Cross CEO Vince Brogdon is happy now but back in November.

"I think the vote today just set Richmond County back 20 years. Instead of moving it forward, I think it's going back 20 years," said Brogdon.

He was upset because the council voted to name Augusta Richmond County the zone provider. He disagreed with the council decision and took it all the way to the state.
The state called for a re vote.

For years, the area has been co-zoned between the Augusta Fire Department and Gold Cross.

"When we looked at it under the laws and rules. we found that it was inappropriate," said Committee Member Courtney Terwillinger.

Terwillinger voted in favor of allowing Gold cross to set wait times for 911 calls and set the maximum number of ambulances they'll have on the road.

"Historically I've watched county governments when new commissioners coming in and in an effort to save money have squeezed ambulance service," said Terwillinger.

When it comes to providing that service they evaluated three groups on economy, efficiency and benefit to public welfare. Goldcross EMS came out on top.
