Girl Scouts work to send cookies to troops

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- "Would you like to buy some Girl Scout cookies?" asked a few Girl Scouts from Troop 20711.

If you do, you have the option of sending a box to our troops overseas.

The program is called "Cookies From Home."

"Customers can donate cookies and we will transport them for free over to our deployed soldiers during the season," explained Peggy Frye, the Evans Girls Scout service unit manager.

Frye has dedicated years of her life to the Girl Scouts and has a personal connection to the Cookies From Home program.

"I'm prior Air Force and my husband's prior Navy," she said.

The Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia just started this program about four years ago.

And now Frye is just grateful for the opportunity to give back to the troops.

"I love being able to offer that taste of home," she said. "Because when we were in Italy as active duty, we didn't have that taste of home."

"To be able to do that now for our soldiers, currently men and women over there, it's great," Frye said.

A little bite to remind them of the place they're trying to protect.

"It means a lot, really it does," said Petty Officer Trevor Mork. "It takes me back to having memories back home when my dad would bring back Girl Scout cookies."

Petty Officer Mork is from Montana. Now stationed at Fort Gordon, Mork has been away from home during his entire four year naval career.

"There are times where it's kinda like we feel like we're out there on our own, but when we have backing from America as a whole, it just feels great," Mork said.

Support that these Girls Scouts are more than happy to provide.

"We should help the community, the world and our town," said Lucy Johnson, a Girl Scout with Troop 20771.
