ATLANTA (AP) -- State officials say Georgia recorded 10 fewer arrests for boating under the influence during Memorial Day weekend than during the same time period last year.
Gov. Nathan Deal said in a statement that a public awareness campaign and legislation signed in 2013 making penalties for drunk boat operation similar to those for drunk driving may be a factor in this year's number.
Deal says the state Department of Natural Resources will also launch a boater education course in July that will be required for any boat operator born on or after Jan. 1, 1998.
