Ga. Rep. Barrow already a top GOP target for 2014

Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) -- Barely two months after he won re-election, Democratic Rep. John Barrow of Augusta is already being named a top target by Republicans looking to pick up congressional seats in 2014.

The National Republican Congressional Committee's executive director, Liesl Hickey, released a memo Wednesday naming Barrow as one of seven House Democrats whose defeat will be priorities for the GOP in the next election.

Republicans have poured money into campaigns against Barrow in the past. But Georgia voters have elected the Democrat to serve five terms.

In 2012 the GOP had its best shot at beating Barrow in years after Republican state lawmakers redrew his 12th District seat to carve out Savannah, the congressman's Democratic base. Barrow still managed to defeat Republican challenger Lee Anderson with 54 percent of the vote.
