COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A special GOP House committee created to look for ways to strengthen South Carolina's ethics laws is scheduled to meet.

The Republican study committee is slated to meet Thursday at the Statehouse.

Last month, House Republican and Democratic leaders appointed members to separate panels charged with coming up with proposed legislation for the new session, which begins in January.

The groups are meeting separately, but leaders from both parties say they will collaborate.

Gov. Nikki Haley has said she wants ethics reform to be a legislative priority. In August, she and Attorney General Alan Wilson -- both Republicans -- traveled the state, touting a reform package that would abolish the legislative ethics panels and instead funnel all ethics complaints against public officials through the State Ethics Commission.
