AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Well-known Augusta Attorney Freddie Sanders says he will run for sheriff of Richmond County and plans to run as a Republican.

The former Richmond County police chief admits as the only Republican candidate so far, this one will be a challenge.

"Me being elected on the Republican ticket in this town is like the proverbial camel through the eye of a needle. I know what I have to do," he said. "But I think we stereotype people when we say they are going to vote for this or vote for that and they don't look at the person."

The blogs are pushing a theory -- that Sanders is an insurance policy if a certain Democratic candidate fails to snag the votes.

"It is not true. I am in this race. I am in this race to win. I am not in this race for any safety valve. I'm not in it for anything else," he said.

Sanders said he's in this for the long haul.

"I will not get out, and I'm planning on being on the ballot in November, and I'm going to be on the ballot in November ... No matter who wins the Democratic primary," he said. "And if they vote for the qualifications, then I believe they'll vote for me. If they don't, I appreciate the opportunity to run. I love Richmond County."

Whatever the outcome, Sanders says to remember he's no stranger to the blues.

"I have played Rhythm with the Blues Express," revealed Sanders. "I love music."

He said he is thinking about making his official announcement next week.
