GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW) -- It all started before the new year, when Grovetown Middle School 6th grade science teacher Tina Zimmerman learned about the Publix Go Green Science Video Competition.
The competition invited students to submit a video expressing ideas about conservation and sustainability.
And, Zimmerman used the contest to help students learn about conservation and renewable and non-renewable resources, which is part of curriculum standards for the 6th grade.
Several teams and students of Zimmerman's submitted videos, but at the end of February she learned one of those teams one the grand prize.
"It made me really happy," she said. "They were so excited. Their facial expressions were priceless."
Each student receives a $400 gift card to Apple and Zimmerman says she feels their win will inspire other students at Grovetown Middle.
"When I offered the contest to the students, they were like 'no, we're not going to win. I don't want to do this.' Now that we have winners from our school, I think in the years to come more students will be apt to do it," she explained.
Cole Wollet, Edrick Olivar, Josie McDaniel and Londyn Lily won for submitting their video, "Go Green News," where they acted as a news team to talk about the environment.
And when they learned they won, they were shocked.
"I can't just talk right now because I can't believe I just won," said Olivar.
"I had no idea it was going to be us!" Wollet exclaimed. "When we were doing it I thought...what were we thinking?"
"When it comes down to it, you're not really sure because it doesn't feel possible that you could've won," McDaniel explained. "But, when you find out that you actually won...it's crazy."
"It feels amazing," said Lily. "I'm so happy I could actually scream right now.
All four students say the video helped them learn the importance of recycling, which is something they're now doing at home.
And aside from the students winning big, Zimmerman also received at $100 to Publix.
