COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A former accountant with the South Carolina Education Lottery has been arrested following a SLED investigation.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says Anthony McNeil embezzled over $200,000 over two years. McNeil's employment was terminated on Oct. 10. He was arrested on Tuesday.
“Appropriate actions have been taken, and the accounting discrepancies have been resolved,” said SCEL Executive Director Paula Harper Bethea in a news release.
The SCEL says additional monitoring procedures have been put into place and that none of the players, games or prizes were in jeopardy.
“The people of South Carolina and our lottery players can know that at no time was the integrity or the security of the central gaming system or any of our games affected,” Bethea said.
The SCEL plans on prosecuting and seeking restitution.
