AUGUSTA (WRDW) -- A former Richmond County deputy enters a guilty plea and ends up sentenced to probation.

The Clerk of Court's Office confirms Wade Smith was sentenced as a first offender for Violation of Oath by Public Officer. The judge sentenced him to five years probation. He also pleaded guilty to Criminal Trespass and was sentenced to 12 months probation.

Smith will also need to pay restitution of $900, complete 200 hours of community service and pay a $5,000 fine.

Smith was fired from the Sheriff's Office back in May after a complaint that he did not properly document marijuana, money and a handgun recovered during an investigation.
