First On 12: Chief says slain Aiken officer was 'like one of my kids'

Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2011

AIKEN, S.C. -- News 12 was able to speak with Aiken Public Safety Chief Pete Frommer about one of his own officers who died in the line of duty Tuesday.

Fommer said Scott Richardson was like a son to him.

Richardson, 33, was shot in the head by a suspect while he was attempting to make a traffic stop. He was transported to GHSU and later died from his injuries.

Frommer said Richardson always wanted to become a public safety officer and that he was happy to see Richardson progress and become an officer.

He said he talked with Richardson's family Wednesday. The family says that even though it is a tragic loss, it is what Richardson wanted to do.

They would read bad stories in the newspaper and tell Richardson about it, then ask if this is really what he wanted to do and he would say, "Yes."

Frommer said Richardson leaves behind three children and a wife.

Richardson's visitation will be held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home on East Pine Log. His services will be held at the USC Aiken Convocation Center on Tuesday.

A vigil has been planned for Monday night on the front lawn of the Aiken Department of Public Safety from 5 to 8 p.m.
