AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW)--Aiken Co. will have a new helicopter policy starting July 24th.

Wagener Fire Chief Mark Redd tells News 12 the county has instructed him that first responder, including firefighters, will now have the ability to dispatch choppers if needed in the trauma or emergency. No questions will be asked, Redd says.

This change comes after Redd and others complained about the old policy where EMS supervisors had to approve the chopper. Dozens of first responses told News 12 the old policy sometimes cost valuable time and may have contributed to the mortality rate of patients.
