AUGUSTA,Ga -- Lt. Melvin Harris was booked into the Richmond County jail facing a felony theft charge; he's accused of stealing thousands of dollars paid by businesses for fire inspection fees.
"He's made a mistake," said Lt. Jimmy Young with the sheriff's office. "You always think oh my goodness not this."
Harris is a 30 year veteran of the fire department.
"Taking money from taxpayers is not tolerated at all," said Fire Chief Christopher James.
Chief James first spoke out on News 12. He was seeking to reassure the community as we learn at least 10 businesses are impacted.
"There is no reason to be fearful of conducting business with the city," said Chief James. "When issues come up we will address them quickly."
Lt.Young says Harris faces serious charges.
"It is pretty serious because this will culminate in possibly being multiple counts," said Young.
In the end, a respected inspector with years under his belt now faces years in prison for stealing a suspected few thousand dollars.
"Old saying goes," said Young. "There are bad apples in every barrel."
Sources tell News 12 losses are between $1,000 and $4,000 for fees ranging from $25 to $100.
