Family burglarized during funeral

AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- Imagine being at a funeral, saying goodbye to a lost loved one and then walking out of that funeral and finding your car broken into with your belongings stolen.

That's exactly what happened to three people Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the Hatcher Funeral Home on Jefferson Davis Highway.

Three vehicles were broken into, all while their owners were inside saying goodbye to 70-year-old Frankie Lee Craig.

Crooks made off with a handgun, an iPod, a cellphone, cash, credit and debit cards and a lot of sensitive info.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office is investigating the burglaries.

Hatcher Funeral Home handed over surveillance video to the Sheriff's Office. Some family members say the black car shown in the footage is the getaway car.

Friends and family are taking to social media to share the video, hoping someone can identify the black car or the person or people behind the crime, which is something the Sheriff's Office supports.

"Ensure that they're looking out for each other," said Capt. Eric Abdullah of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office. "If you see someone smashing out a window at the parking lot and you're a witness, be a good witness and notify your local law enforcement agency."

Family members weren't able to meet with News 12 on Thursday, but they say they've raised a $500 reward to go to anyone who can give information to the Sheriff's Office that would lead to an arrest or items returned. They also send their thanks to those in the community helping get the word out about what happened.

Some have contacted News 12 saying they've been targeted while mourning their loved ones, too.

Abudullah says this has never been a problem in Aiken County, and officials say there aren't any trends in other nearby counties.

But Abudullah says, in terms of car theft, the Sheriff's Office urges folks try to keep expensive items in cars hidden or outside of their car.
