AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- It's Memorial Day, and people all across the country are remembering fallen soldiers.

Jerry Morian helped organize an event at Wade Hampton Park in North Augusta. He says Memorial Day hasn't always been on the last Monday in May and it was a day both sides used to remember fallen soldiers from the Civil War.

"Back then it was observed on May 30. That was because there was no battle fought it on May 30," he said.

Active duty and those who served in previous wars, all the way back to World War II made it out. One solider even wore his original uniform from the 1940s, and because of his sacrifice, Morian says the nation should make Memorial Day more of a cherished day.

"We like to emphasize the observance and the memorization of those people who have died for the country, who have paid the price of freedom," Morian said.

Across the river, Georgia Congressman John Barrow met with veterans in a town hall meeting. He says the most recent conflicts remind us all of the cost of war.

"I think our nation is growing to appreciate Memorial Day a little bit more. I think the sacrifice and service of our men and women in the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan are helping us focus our attention on Memorial Day," he said.

A day steeped in history reminds us to remember those who fought for us and our freedom.
