AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- One of the candidates for Georgia's open United States Senate seat has dropped out of the race.

Eugene Yu has decided to run in the 12th Congressional race for the seat held by Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.) instead.

Yu, a Columbia County businessman, became the first Korean-American to run for the senate seat.

In switching races, Yu leaves a field crowded with contenders that includes well known congressmen and the daughter of a U.S. Senator.

In the congressional race, Yu will face just 3 other republicans who want to take on democratic incumbent Barrow in the general election.

Yu may be a new face in Georgia politics, but he's been in Augusta for years. His friends from the Butler High School class of '74 called him Chin Yu. The former firefighter and Richmond County deputy took the name Eugene when he became a U.S. citizen and joined the Army.

The candidate sat down for an exclusive interview with News 12's Richard Rogers.
