Elderly Aiken man drowns after canoe capsizes

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW)-An elderly Aiken man died Tuesday afternoon after his canoe capsized, according to Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.

The Coroner identified the victim as 74-year-old William Richardson. Richardson was fishing at Gem Lakes around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, according to investigators.

Witnesses told investigators Richardson and a friend were trying to pull an anchor up, when the boat overturned. Life jackets were in the boat, but the two weren't wearing them, according to officials.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning in Newberry, S.C.
