Do you know if bed bugs are in your home?

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Todd Walker is gauging the temperature of each room of a house before he goes in.

"A lot of the stuff is hot and it kind of burns your legs if you're not careful." said Walker as he showed News 12 the infested home.

It takes heaters that are cranked up to 135 degrees to kill the bed bugs that took over the home he's working at.

"You can see all the dead bed bugs that were on the mattress that have already died from the heat," said Walker as he lifted up a mattress.

The heaters inside are controlled by a computer outside that shows the temperature each room is at.

"They are very difficult to see; you really have to know what you're looking for," said Robert Hebbard.

Hebbard works for a local exterminating company. He says even though the critters are hard to see, keep an eye for signs of droppings or even spats of blood. He says even new items like clothes or comforters can carry them, but that's not all.

"When we go to stay out of town at a motel room I'm checking the mattress, the piping around the mattress, behind the pictures, the bed frame. You really got to watch where you are sleeping because these things will hitch a ride home with you," he said.

Hebbard says the fully grown bed bugs are easier to see than the ones at a smaller stages. And while they maybe hard to see them, it's even harder to feel them on you.

"When the bug bites the skin, they inject a material that kind of deadens the skin. So you really don't feel it," he said.

Just because you can't feel the bite doesn't mean you won't see its effects. Hebbard says they usually get red and look like mosquito bites. So, remember they can be anywhere, but hopefully they won't be in your house.

Bed bugs carry diseases -- and a lot of them -- but luckily they can't be passed on to humans. Either way, be aware of your surroundings and always check for them -- even when you buy new items.
