AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Did the Citizens Advisory Committee quit or were they fired? Board members say they were given the ax, while some city leaders say they just stopped showing up to the meeting.

Members held a news conference on Thursday to address what really happened and how the city should move forward.

"If the commission wants an advisory committee, I have no problem with that," said Director Of HCD Chester Wheeler.

"I think it's important that we continue to work close with the community," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

"I think they are liars," said CAC Board Member Barbra Gordon.

This group says that those two are responsible for breaking up the Citizens Advisory Committee.

"I think they need to be held accountable. They can say anything. Because they're in authority, people will then take it and run with it," Gordon said.

A new deal to add a Citizens Advisory Committee recently failed. Mr. Russell and Mr. Wheeler told Augusta commissioners old board members just stopped showing up.

"He told us that he was going to shut us down. It's not in writing because it was his office," said CAC Board Member Irma Williams.

"If it becomes a situation of our words against theirs, we have our paperwork," Gordon said.

"He started giving us four pages. We sat around the table bewildered wondering, why are we here? After we talked to Fred and nothing happened, why would we keep going? We are busy people," Gordon said.

"Somebody needs to know what they're doing. Somebody needs to come back to the commission," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.
