AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- Two deputies found two people in an Aiken house fire on Piper Road on Friday morning, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputy Kenneth Lively and Deputy Nicholas Lott said they heard someone calling for a family pet and coughing in the home at 4 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office said. The home was full of heavy black smoke.

The victims were treated for smoke inhalation when they escaped the home.

"Throughout my career in Public Safety, I have seen law enforcements officers, like Lively and Lott, continue to set an example of service to citizens by risking their lives to help save others," the Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt said in a release. "I commend these officers for their service to the citizens of Aiken County."
