RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- A 17-year-old girl was arrested in Richmond County, accused of killing her father, Mike Howell.

Haywood County Deputies confirmed they believe Crystal Brooke Howell is the one who shot him. Her dad was a sports editor for the Columbia County News-Times when he lived in the area.

Mike Howell was living near Maggie Valley, N.C. when deputies said some people wanting to rent his property found his body Saturday. His daughter was arrested in Augusta Sunday. She is now awaiting extradition back to North Carolina to face murder charges.

According to Monday morning’s autopsy, Howell died from a single shotgun wound to the head.

“This tragic event appears to have been an isolated incident,” said Haywood County Sheriff Greg Christopher in a release. “There is no evidence to suggest any risk to other Haywood County citizens.”
