MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW) -- The Davitte family is thanking the community after a man allegedly shot Bill and beat Jenny as they turned on the sprinklers at their church.

The family and friends of Bill DaVitte would like to thank all of you who have comforted and supported us since Bill was taken from us.

The statement reads:

"Over the last few days, you have all shared your grief, tears, hugs and handshakes. We want you to know we have felt your love for Bill. We’ve welcomed your laughter too and the stories you shared of the good times with Bill. He touched all of us and we are grateful for your memories. We will add them to our own.

Bill was special and so are all his friends. You meant so much to him. You mean so much to us.

Thank you,
The Bill DaVitte Family "

Daniel Robinson is accused of shooting and killing Bill Davitte during an attempted carjacking on Aug. 14, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said. Investigators say Jenny was sitting alone in her car when Robinson approached and started beating her in the head. When Bill ran over to help, he was shot three times, officers said.

Several hours later, Robinson was arrested on several charges while in Jacksonville.

There's a hold placed on Robinson by Columbia County.
