AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- A missing fisherman on the Edisto River has been found dead.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton says the body of 81-year-old John Champy Sr. was recovered around 4 a.m. Thursday approximately 2 miles upriver from the Veterans Road boat landing.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, along with Williston Rescue, had been searching for Champy throughout the night near the South Fork Edisto River Boat Ramp. That's just a half a mile from the intersection of Oak Ridge Club Road and Veterans Road in Williston.

The coroner says Champy left to go fishing Wednesday morning, and friends began to search for him when he did not return as scheduled.

The victim’s vehicle and boat trailer were found near the boat landing on Veterans Road.

Dispatch says they received the report Champy was missing around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

The Aiken County Coroner's Office and DNR are investigating the cause of death. Officials say no foul play is suspected at this point.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday morning in Newberry, S.C.
