DJJ names new director at Augusta YDC

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta Youth Development Campus has a new acting director, as of Tuesday.

Melvin Womble had been the YDC's assistant director of security since March 2012.

The Department of Juvenile Justice says he is a retired drill instructor and platoon sergeant with the Army and has worked in the Georgia Department of Corrections for 16 years. Two of those years were at the Augusta State Medical Prison as a unit manager, and he spent another six years there as a Correctional Emergency Response Team sergeant.

Ronald Brawner resigned as facility director earlier this month, effective Nov. 15. He is on leave until that date.

The DJJ and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are continuing to look into the YDC after five inmates escaped from the facility earlier this month. Several employees were suspended after that incident.
