DJJ commissioner picks new principal for Augusta YDC

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- News 12 has just learned there's a new principal for the Augusta Youth Development Campus.

The commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice has named Dr. Carol Yancy as the new Augusta YDC principal.

According to a news release, Yancy has 22 years of teaching experience. She has been a classroom teacher, lead teacher and part of the the Augusta YDC School Leadership Training Team. She is also the former DJJ Regional Teacher of the Year.

Since Dr. Yancy has been on the staff of the DHH since April 1998, she was also the agency's choice to step in as acting principal at the YDC after the dismissal of the former principal Dr. Brenda James-Ford back in December.

Commissioner Niles released this statement regarding Dr. Yancy:
"Dr. Yancy has a professional history with the Department of Juvenile Justice and she has done an excellent job for DJJ. Associate Superintendent Armistad and I are very pleased with the selection of Dr. Yancy for this high-profile education leadership position at Augusta YDC."

Yancy has a bachelor's degree in middle grades education from Paine College with a concentration in science, health, and physical education. She has also completed her master's in general education at Troy State University with a concentration in administration and supervision. In addition, she has a earned a doctor of philosophy in education from Capella University, specializing in elementary and secondary administration.

She is a member of the National Association of Professional Women and is an Augusta native who has previously worked at both the DJJ Milledgeville and Augusta Youth Development Campuses.

She will begin in the new position on Jan. 16.
