AIKEN, SC (WRDW) -- Aiken Public Safety firefighters battled flames around 2:15 a.m. at Mead Hall's Aiken Prep campus on Friday.
School officials said firefighters believe the fire was electrical, but investigators were having a little trouble determining how the flames spread through the cottage.
They say an Aiken Public Safety officer spotted the flames and called into dispatch.
Once crews arrived, the art cottage was fully engulfed in flames. Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire and the school says they will open as normal Friday morning for students.
"The message to the kids is to think about what's important," Headmaster Kitty Gordon said. "The losses today were material losses. No one was injured no one was hurt. We're thankful for that and when you have a set back in life you need to mount up with strength and go forward."
School officials said the art teacher lost about 30 years worth of her art while many of the students lost their entire portfolios as well.
