AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- A single-vehicle crash in Aiken County has killed one teen and critically injured another.
It happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Piper Road, killing the driver, 18-year-old Justin G. Cantwell, and critically injuring 17-year-old Dustin Day.
The pair were traveling north on the 2000 block when Cantwell lost control of the vehicle, went into a ditch and struck a utility pole, causing the vehicle to overturn and eject them both.
Cantwell and Day were taken to the Georgia Regents University Medical Center. Cantwell was pronounced dead Saturday morning from multiple body trauma. Day remains in critical condition.
Authorities say neither were wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and that alcohol is considered a contributing factor. A toxicology report is pending.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is now investigating the crash.
