AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW) -- People living in one area of Aiken say after this morning’s fatal accident on Silver Bluff, maybe someone will listen to their concerns.

Gerald Quattlebaum Jr., 26, died at the scene of a one-car crash Thursday at 5:28 a.m., the Aiken County Coroner's Office said. Quattlebaum was traveling south on Silver Bluff Road when he lost control, struck an embankment and was ejected from the vehicle, the Coroner's Office said.

Silver Bluff Road between Hartwell Drive and Savannah Drive was shut down temporarily Thursday morning.

“I'm surprised that it is fatal but I'm not surprised that something has occurred,” said Cassie Blush who drives by the intersection four times a day.

Aiken Public Safety said the intersection at Silver Bluff and Woodside Plantation isn’t in their top list of most common locations for traffic injuries but drivers say it’s a problem area nonetheless.

“We've gotten passed all the time people just flying so it really was just a matter of time before something happened,” Blush said.

City leaders says part of the reason there has recently been more traffic in that area is because of the expansion two years ago to the intersection of Sliver Bluff and Hitchcock Parkway.
