Commissioner Marion Williams owes county $3K in back property taxes

Commissioner Marion Williams wants all city employees to live in city limits and to help pay taxes. Some other commissioners are calling him a hypocrite.

News 12 did some digging and found Commissioner Marion Williams owes the county almost $3,000 in back property taxes. Williams tells us he has plans to pay, and he's not worried about his haters.

Commissioner Marion Williams has been preaching for weeks that all city employees should live in Augusta Richmond County and pay taxes.

Problem is we found the reverend may not be listening to his own message. Williams owes the county nearly $3,000 in property taxes, some dating back to 2012.

Commissioner Alvin Mason was at a loss for words. "Um, well first of all," said Commissioner Mason.

He regrouped and still couldn't get it together. "First of all that's probably not a good idea on his part. You have got to be kidding me," said Mason.

Other commissioners chimed in as well. "You lead by example and it's hard to get somebody else to pay delinquent taxes when you owe them," said Commissioner Grady Smith.

"It doesn't look good at all. It doesn't look good at all. I've been told you shouldn't throw rocks if you live in a glass house," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.

"I don't worry about my colleagues. They are haters and they motivate me," said Williams.

According to tax records, he owes more than $800 each on homes on Olive Road and Kratha Drive
Williams owes more than $1,100 for a house on Lionel Street.

Here's what he said when we showed him the tax bill. "This is my tax bill. I'm behind on my property taxes and will have to pay penalties just like everybody else. I live here and I pay my property taxes," said Williams.
