AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The $40 million dollar makeover at the Augusta Municipal building is not working out as planned.

Commissioners just voted to stop construction on the eighth and ninth floors. We're told leaders are slowing things down before the price tag goes up.

"I'll be damned if we are going to spend anymore taxpayer dollars when they're not delivering on what we needed," Commissioner Joe Jackson said.

Commissioner Jackson is one of nine other leaders upset about the renovations at the municipal building. Some city leaders have more space than others. Commissioners have three meeting rooms and two extra offices in the mayor's office.

"They mentioned talking to the law department about space. We make those decisions not the law department," Commissioner Alvin Mason said.

The mayor has a receptionist desk but no receptionist. The city clerk doesn't have enough room to keep records she's obligated by law to keep.

Ten Commissioners share one bathroom they can use two ways. They can use the bathroom at the urinal or at the toilet. The toilet doesn't even have a stall for privacy,

City leaders are calling out Heery international and Architects Virgo Gambil for what's being called a poor design. They're also blaming Former City Administrator Fred Russell.

"If we had of taking care of business four or five years ago with our previous city administrator, it's another situation where it's a shame," Commissioner Alvin Mason said.

City leaders will have a special meeting next week to address concerns over the renovations and space.
