COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- Columbia County investigators say a Columbia County school employee has been arrested.

Deputies are charging John Padgett with failure to report child abuse. Padgett is accused of not reporting allegations involving child molestation involving a member of his family.

Padgett turned in his resignation to the Columbia County Board of Education Monday, and members accepted it at Tuesday's meeting.

Padgett worked as a hearing officer for the Columbia County School System. He oversaw hearings and punishments involving student misconduct.

The Sheriff's Office says Padgett's job with the school system requires him to report any cases of abuse.

Investigators say the alleged abuse happened between two and three years ago. The victim filed a report this month and the Sheriff's Office began its investigating.

Padgett has worked for the school system for 16 years, Columbia County Superintendent Dr. Sandra Carraway said. He was arrested Friday afternoon and has not been back to work since then, she said.
