AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Thursday night begins a new chapter for now former Columbia County Superintendent Charles Nagle.

Thursday was his last day on the job.

"Everyone's proud," he said. "This is a day that we all live to get to retire."

He's worked in Columbia County for 24 years, spending the last six as superintendent.

"A lot of things I've done right and people asked me how did you know to do that, and it's because I've already done it the wrong way and learned from it," he said.

He's faced many challenges along the way.

"One of the most immediate things that I had to address was the down economy," Nagle said.

That's a struggle the school system continues to face. Nagle's last big obligation came Tuesday night.

"We were able to pass a budget another year without having to reduce the school calendar, which would have meant furloughing teachers," he said.

Starting July 1, Dr. Sandra Carraway will sit at this now very empty desk filling the walls with her own accomplishments of her 27-year career.

"She has helped to weather some of the storms and she knows where the vision has been and what the vision is for the future," he said.

A future Nagle says he's leaving in good hands.

"I feel that I have served this community well. I've given it everything I have and I hope they feel that."

Nagle says he is looking forward to vacation and spending time with his family.

He says he will miss the students, but he'll be back. He plans to volunteer some time reading to classes in the elementary schools.
