WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW) -- There's a new police chief in Waynesboro.

On Monday, City Council members selected Augustus Palmer III as the new top cop. The vote was three to one with two council members not attending the meeting.

Palmer was working at the police department in Riverdale, Ga. He will take over for Alfonzo Williams. Williams left the department to take over public safety for the Richmond County School System.

We're told Palmer has family living in Waynesboro.

He is slated to start his new position May 27.
