AUGUSTA, Ga (WRDW) -- City Administrator Fred Russell confirms retirement conversations are starting and he'd like to give the city enough time to find a replacement.

One commissioner tells News 12, he is not being fired and this is a mutual decision.

"You won't have Fred to kick around anymore," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

City Administrator Fred Russell is excited at the thought of being able to retire next year.

"It's a personnel issue and I won't comment on that," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver.

The mayor is just about the only one not talking about it.

"I was hoping that it wouldn't be a lot of negative publicity about us firing the guy. We are not and this is a mutual agreement," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.

"This is such a wonderful place. I can be convinced to stay or they can get rid of me sooner. At this point, I felt the obligation to tell people I was thinking about it," Russell said.

Russell said he's proud of his accomplishments with his 10 years on the job. Russell cites the building of the Tee Center, new judicial center and Laney Walker Redevelopment as some of his top accomplishments.

"Despite the fact, we should've raised taxes, we haven't in the last five years. It's something we can put on our resume," said Russell.

Some commissioners have questioned whether or not the Deputy Administrator Tameka Allen is the right one for the job, Fred seems to thinks so.

"I think Tamika would do a fine job and they should look at her. I suggested that they hire a head hunter to come in and evaluate. She would compete well," said Russell.
