Judge decides not to prosecute assault case against Commissioner Alvin Mason

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta Commissioner Alvin Mason appeared in a Richmond County courtroom to face charges of simple assault and battery and family violence for a December 2011 incident involving his wife.
News 12 was in the courtroom as the judge has decided not to prosecute on the assault and battery charges and has placed the third charge on a court docket if another crime is committed at a later time.
Mason was accused of assaulting his wife last December. His wife, Velma Mason, called 911 and claimed Mason grabbed her by her throat and pushed her against the wall. Mason claimed he was attempting to be the peacemaker during a family argument.
Since the incident, Velma Mason has supported her husband and eventually signed a consent of release form.
"I feel I am not in any danger based on my husband coming home. It would be best that we work our issues at home," she stated.
