Furloughs hit Fort Gordon causing several gates to close.
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Changes are being made to the gate schedules at Fort Gordon after major traffic backups Monday morning.
Beginning Monday, only two gates were open to traffic to get on post due to the furloughs of security guards.
The following changes were announced Monday afternoon:
- Gate 1 will be open 24/7 to normal and commercial traffic.
- Starting Tuesday, Gate 2 will be open to inbound and outbound traffic between 5:30 and 9 a.m. Monday through Friday. Starting at 3 p.m. Monday, it will be open for outbound traffic only between 3 and 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will remained closed at all other times.
- Gate 5 will be open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. seven days a week.
- Gate 3 will be closed to traffic.
Installation leadership was able to redistribute guards and military policemen so Gate 2 could be reopened.
"While this will not significantly increase the inbound capacity of the gates, it will redistribute some of the traffic that converged on Gate 1, Gordon Highway and Jimmy Dyess Parkway this morning," said a news release from Fort Gordon. "Fort Gordon will continue to assess the situation daily and make adjustments as warranted."
