AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Deputies say one man was sent to the hospital after a chase that turned into a crash early Tuesday morning.

It happened just before 2:30 a.m. on Morgan Road.

They say they were pursuing the driver, Derrick Duane Simmons, for speeding when the driver sped up and then crashed the vehicle.

Simmons will face charges of fleeing/attempting to allude, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Investigators say Simmons had 25 grams of a green, leafy substance -- later identified as marijuana -- and a digital scale.

Simmons was taken to the hospital and is said to be in fair condition.
