Bus expansion will have to wait until next year

Augusta,Ga (WRDW)-----The city's bus system is on the road to expanding to Fort Gordon, but don't look for any changes for the rest of this year. A few things are standing in the way including security and cost.

Fort Gordon and city leaders have some work to do. Michael Smith is excited to hear the city is looking to expand bus routes to Fort Gordon.

Smith says it may help him find work after being unemployed for six years. "I have to decline jobs that's out of town, because I don't have transportation," said Bus Rider Michael Smith.

The plan is to start small. "We have just one proposed at this time," said McDonald Transit Manager Quentarus Brown.

Brown was part of the meeting with City and Fort Gordon Officials. He says right now the talks center around adding one bus and one route to the post from 5:30am to 7pm.

Brown says the bus would take soldiers to the mall and k-mart. The cost for adding the route and cutting bus wait times from from 80 minutes to 60 minutes could cost more than $320,000.

"We will be allowed to go on base and do pick up and drop offs," said Brown.

City leaders are also considering whether to add Tobacco road and Windsor spring road to this first expansion. "I'm going to say Fort Gordon because the people on Tobacco Road have nice cars," said

Before buses start rolling, leaders have to work out security details of allowing city buses on post loaded with civilians and the time it would take to search them.

They also need to have a final cost and then a vote by a majority of commissioners before smith's hopes become a reality.
