Burke Co. deputy in hospital after getting hit by a bullet

BURKE COUNTY, Ga.--A Burke County Sheriff's deputy is recovering in the hospital after suffering a bullet wound while on duty.

According to the Burke County Sheriff, deputies were out responding to a shed fire behind a house in Sardis when Deputy Jay Hollingsworth was injured. They believe a weapon, possibly a 9MM handgun, that was stored in the shed discharged, hitting Hollingsworth.

The deputy was rushed to GRU Medical Center for surgery to remove the bullet.

We are told Cpl. Hollingsworth is out of surgery and in recovery. The bullet did not hit any vital organs. He is expected to be moved to ICU for recovery.

Corporal Hollingsworth is the son of Burke County Chief Deputy Hollingsworth.

Right now the state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
