Biker rally spreads message of safety for drivers on the road

AUGUSTA, Ga (WRDW) -- It's a memory Jan Yu doesn't like to replay.

"I remember three seconds before I knew I couldn't lay my bike down, and I knew I was going to be hit," Yu said.

It was a normal day five years ago that almost turned deadly in a matter of seconds.

"I was riding down Washington Road, and a person not paying attention to the road ran into me," she told News 12.

It crushed every bone in her right leg, leaving her in a wheel-chair for nine months.

But she knows she was saved for a good reason.

"We have friends that weren't so lucky," Yu said.

That's why she's here at the GreenJackets game where the Harley Davidson of Augusta is riding for a cause.

They're spreading the word about their friends like David Sheffield, who died after a driver failed to yield when switching lanes.

It's an accident they say could have been avoided.

"Motorcyclists and motorists both share a responsibility for the roadways to be safe," Ly Eldridge said.

She works with the Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program and is making it her mission to speak to drivers about sharing the road.

"They want to be seen on the roadway, and so that's the biggest thing that we tell everyone who is riding in a car or driving a truck," she told News 12.

All to keep an eye out for those who sometimes go unnoticed.

"At the end of the ride, you want to come home to your family," she said.

And that's exactly what Yu is thankful for.

She got another chance to see her family and another chance to ride again.

"I can't let life stop me from doing what makes me happy," Yu said.
