Augusta, Ga. (WRDW) -- A warning for parents about something your kids may be hearing about. Some of them are are starting to use a fairly common product to get high. News 12 is on your side with how a certain kind of lip balm is giving teenagers a buzz.
The stuff you use for chapped lips is now the high teens across the country are sharing on the internet.
Anthony Creswell runs a recovery center for teenagers and young adults in Augusta. He's just hearing about the beezin trend, but he's not surprised.
"The vics inhalors...I've heard of people blowing it in people's eyes," Creswell told News 12.
He admits teens could be doing this as a joke, but parents should not take any of it as a laughing matter.
"If you start off with little things like that what's the next thing that's cool? Smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, sneaking out. It can progress," he said.
Creswell isn't a doctor but says the balm could cause irritated eyes and may even transfer sores from your lip.
"Putting something that is meant for your lips on the external I'm sure will cause some sort of damage," Creswell told News 12.
The regular signs of missing school or dropping grades can give parents a heads up on any drug abuse, but when moms and dads see it upfront Creswell says take action.
"You showing that you are addressing the problem to your kid is a big deal. I think any kid looks for the wall. They want to know what's right and wrong," he said.
