Basketball court turns into bedroom for 500 Georgia Power workers

News12 / Sunday Feb. 16, 2014

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Handshakes and a welcome signs is waiting at the front door of the Wheeler YMCA for crews of Georgia Power.

After days of being away from home and 16 hour shifts to bring power back on for many of you.

The YMCA decided to also help those helping us.

"Looking to give back and try to help some of these utilities workers that are in town." said Steve Pokrywka.

Pokrywka runs the center and for now his basketball court will double as a big bedroom.

"We got five hundred cots set up and we've had volunteers help," he said.

The linemen were fed first and then they had a chance to shower before hitting the sack. Something Pokrywka says they're glad to do for those who have done so much for us.
