Back-to-school costs add up for teachers

RICHMOND COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- School is just around the corner, and that means back to school shopping.

Buying everything on that school supply list can get pricey. Many teachers say they're also bearing the burden of the back to school costs.

To say Carol Bennett is stocked up for back to school, is an understatement. "Writing paper, notebooks, crayons, markers, bookbags for the kids, because a lot of kids don't have bookbags," Bennett said.

She's been working in schools for over twenty years now. "My kids are my heart, whether they're my personal kids or my kids at school," she said.

But teaching, especially this time of year, can come at a price. Bennett told News 12 she and her husband buy the school supplies from the beginning, so she knows all of her kids will have what they need.

Bennett teaches at Jenkins-White Elementary School. Like students in the rest of Richmond County, all of her students are in the free lunch program. For most of them, getting school supplies, just isn't always possible.

"It's a struggle to see them carry books and pencils in a plastic grocery bag," she said.

So she sees programs like the Academy Sports and Outdoors donations earlier today, as essential. Every donation of pens, pencils, folders and notebooks, to fill up those backpacks is one less cost for those teachers going back to school. "It's a load off of our shoulders, but most of the time teacher's are going to do it any how," Bennett said.

Despite the cost, and the big chunk out of her paychecks to provide for her students, she says it's worth it. "Once your a student in my classroom you will always be my child. And that's how I look at it," Bennett said.
